A keen student artist at High School, I developed a deeper interest through gallery visits. The Matisse and Fauve exhibitions in the 1990s regenerated my interest in creating art. The colour and the less than formal structure of the works appealed to me. A desire to develop my own work followed – a little prompting from my partner saw me surrounded by canvas, paint and all kinds of implements which I use to paint.
I like working in a free abstract manner with contrast between surface, sub-structure, colour and texture. Additives to the paint often mean that the brush is dispensed with, and painting knives or other hard edge objects are used to scrape the paint mixture. The method lends itself to recycle previously abandoned works.
I am presently undertaking a Diploma of Fine Arts at the CAE in Melbourne. During 2013 and 2014 I studied Certificate 3 and 4 Visual Art courses also at the CAE. Since studying I have enjoyed working in a collaborative creative environment with fellow students and lecturers. Exploring various techniques in print-making, collage, sculpture and drawing has been both challenging and enjoyable. Theoretical studies and gallery visits round out the course and provide extra inspiration.
I am inspired by 20th century art movements such as the Fauves, German Expressionists, American Abstract Expressionists as well as several Australian artists among my favourites. Marc Chagall, Nicolas de Stael, Ian Fairweather, Patrick Heron, Wasily Kandinsky, Franz Kline, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Emil Nolde, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Chaim Soutine, Antoni Tapies, Aida Tomescu, Tony Tuckson, Vincent van Gogh, Maurice de Vlamink, and Don van Vliet.
I am part of a working artist studio space at Old Bakery Studio, in Surrey Hills, Victoria. I share this space with 7-8 other practicising fine artists. More information and regular updates on new works and studio open days can be found here on Facebook
